Toronto remains one of the safest cities in North America. According to data published by the Toronto Police Service, the crime rate in the first nine months of 2024 is roughly the same as in the corresponding period of 2023. This marks a shift from the post-Covid trend, where crime rose by 18% in 2022 compared to 2021, followed by an additional 17% increase in 2023 compared to 2022.
When evaluating the safety of Toronto neighbourhoods, we apply the same approach as other organizations: we look at the ratio of crimes to population in a given area. In other words, if two neighbourhoods report the same total number of crimes, the one with a higher population is considered safer, because the chance of becoming a victim of crime there is statistically lower.
For instance, you'll notice below that a total number of crimes in Yonge-St.Clair so far in 2024 has been lower than in Steeles, but the neighbourhood placed 2nd on the list. That is due to a lower population count, and on a per-resident basis, the Steeles neighbourhood is safer.
